Herbal Sun-Tea | Pantry Recipe for Loose leaf teas

Sun-tea is no new idea but it’s a very easy way to make a large amount of tea with very little effort, especially during those hot summer months.

This recipe is just a general overview of how to make sun-tea with loose leaf tea, giving you the opportunity to use whichever tea leaves you wish to use.

Here I go into tools you need, ingredients, and step by step instructions to make a half gallon of sun-tea.

Let’s Dive in…

Herbal Sun Tea Recipe

Tools you need

  • Half gallon glass jar
  • Coffee Filters
  • String

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons of looseleaf tea
  • 1/2 cup sugar or honey
  • 1/2 gallon of water
  • Homemade syrups, such as elderberry, spruce tip, or fruit syrups. (optional)

Instructions

  1. Fill your glass jar up with filtered water.
  2. In your coffee filter, place 3-4 tablespoons of loose-leaf tea or herbs of choice
  3. Tie with a string to make a large pouch.
  4. Submerge into the water and place a lid on the jar.
  5. Place in a sunny spot for 6-8 hours outside. Preferably on a warm day.
  6. After the 6-8 hours, your water should be golden color.
  7. Bring your jar inside and take out the tea bag.
  8. Add sugar or honey and stir well, while the tea is warm. This can be done to taste.
  9. Add syrup of choice, if using, stirring well.
  10. Allow to cool in the fridge before serving for best flavor.
  11. Leftovers can stay in your fridge for a week.

That’s It!

Sun-tea is a classic sign of summer and a great way to use up some of the herbs you are growing in your garden.

I usually use a big mix of herbs like lemon balm, chamomile, dandelion, and mint in my kitchen.

I have even shoved a few fresh pieces of fruit like peaches or berries in a few batches also.

It’s a flexible recipe.

Enjoy!

Happy Gardening!
