Homemade apple butter or jam is a great thickener for apple pie filing and it’s a great way to get through some of your stash.
Just 7 staple ingredients, including a jar of apple butter, and a couple pie crusts (homemade or storebought), and you can get this pie recipe baking in the oven in no time.
Here I go into tools you need, ingredients, and instructions for Apple Butter Pie filling.
Apple Butter Pie Filling | Apple Pie Filling using Jam or Apple Butter
Tools you Need
- Large mixing bowl
- Pie pan (a 9-inch cake pan can work also)
- Aluminum foil for crust
Ingredients
- 2-9inch pie crusts (homemade or storebought)
- 4-5 fresh apples, peeled, sliced thinly
- 1 half pint jar of apple butter, or apple cider butter (homemade jam can also work)
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice
- Egg wash: 1 egg, splash of water with finishing sugar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F
- Peel and slice your apples, place in a bowl.
- Add other ingredients: apple butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, flour, lemon juice. Stir well.
- Line your pie dish with one of the 9-inch crusts.
- Poke several holes in the bottom with a fork.
- Fill pie with your pie filling, spreading evenly.
- Place second 9- inch pie crust on top.
- Slit or design the pie crust as you wish.
- Crimp together pie crust edges. I simply used a fork in the pictures.
- Beat egg, add a splash of water. Place egg wash on top, with a generous amount of finishing sugar.
- Bake 20 minutes.
- After 20 minutes pull pie out of the oven and place aluminum foil, loosely around the crust edges to prevent burning.
- Place back in the oven and bake for another 30-40 minutes until crust is golden brown and you can see the filling bubbling.
- Allow to cool for a long time. Your patience is worth it.
- Enjoy, with ice cream or whipped cream.
That’s It!
If you want a fuller pie, then simply double the recipe and bake for longer.
You can use whichever apples you have on hand; I used honey-crisps because there were on sale this particular week and it turned out delicious!
Nice, thick chunky finishing sugar really makes storebought crusts up to the next level. But if you don’t have any simple use whichever white sugar you want on top.
Enjoy!
