Butter Dinner Rolls | Dinner Roll Recipe using Yeast

Anyone can make their own dinner rolls, and this recipe makes some of the best ones: they are soft, buttery, slightly sweet, perfect with butter, and best of all, they aren’t that hard to make.

This recipe will make you 16 large dinner rolls, which is perfect for holiday gatherings, large parties, or even just for family dinner.

Here I go into tools you need, ingredients, and step by step instructions to make these Butter Dinner Rolls.

Butter Dinner Roll Recipe | Using Yeast

Tools you need

  • Small saucepan
  • Stand mixer with Dough Hook (you can mix this by hand if you wish)
  • 9×13 glass baking dish

Ingredients

  • 2 packets (4.5 teaspoons) fast acting yeast
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 stick butter (1/2 cup)
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 3 eggs
  • 5 cups flour

Instructions

  1. In a small dish, check your yeast: mix yeast with a little warm water and watch for bubbles and froth. If you see bubbles, the yeast is good. If not, try another packet of yeast.
  2. In a saucepan add milk, sugar, butter and heat up on low until just melted and just warm, (about 1-2 minutes) Don’t skip this step because the butter needs to be melted and it’s easier to keep it that way when the milk is warm. Be careful not to make it hot.
  3. Add warm milk/sugar/butter to the mixer.
  4. In the mixer, add yeast, salt, eggs, mix well.
  5. Add flour. About 5 cups; you can use more or less but the Dough should be sticky but holding its shape and slightly climbing the dough hook.
  6. Knead until dough is well mixed.
  7. Allow to rest in the mixing bowl, with a cover. Let rest for 1 hour or so until about double in size.
  8. After 1 hour, place dough on a well-floured surface.
  9. Shape into a large ball and cut into 16 equal parts. (16 makes large rolls; you can use two baking dishes and make them smaller if you wish)
  10. Shape the dough into smaller balls, and place in glass baking dish. Edges should touch.
  11. Allow to rise, with a tight cover, for 1 hour. (you can cut this time shorter if placed in a warm spot)
  12. Bake at 400 degrees for 12-15 minutes. Tops should be thoroughly golden brown, and the bottom should also show a lighter golden-brown color too. (glass dishes are best for this because you can check the bottom).
  13. Allow to cool, so it’s easy to touch. Enjoy warm, or room temperature. Best tasting during the first day.

That’s It!

You can pair these with herb butter if you wish: herb butter is just room temperature butter that has fresh or dried herbs mixed in.

If you do have leftovers for a few days, simply warm them up in the oven for a few minutes.

I also suggest using grass fed butter if you can; it gives them such a nice golden color!

Enjoy!
