A handful of apples, some oats, and a jar of homemade jam is the basis of the comfort dessert.
It’s been a fan favorite in our home for a long time, even though it’s a basic, rustic recipe.
It uses staple pantry ingredients and it’s a great way to use up some of your homemade jam stock.
Here I go into tools you need, ingredients, and instructions to make this comforting dessert.
Let’s Dive In…
Apple Crisp from Scratch Recipe
Homemade Jam
Any homemade jam will do, but blueberry, strawberry, blackberry jams, rhubarb jams, plum jams, pear jams, and even apple butters work especially well with this recipe.
Homemade jam is simply fruits or berries cooked, sweetened, and brought to a gelling point, that is then water bath canned.
It’s a simple method of preserving fruit and can be a very handy ingredient to have.
Here is a basic blueberry jam recipe here that uses frozen berries and pectin, if you wish to look into that.

That’s it!
You also can use pears instead of apples.
I have even added some homegrown berries from time to time to mix it up.
It’s a flexible recipe. Feel free to enjoy it to your liking.
